    Tripple surgeon knot. I prefer these after 30 years of tying flies and leaders. Faster, stronger and easier. Plus, if you’re nymphing or swinging, leave the tag end from your top a little long to tie on another fly.

    I came across this video and wanted to ask a question relating to your Bonefish formula... If I wanted to get my tippet down to 12lb fluoro (0.012' diameter) without extending the length of the leader, could I leave out one of your sections to make room for the additional tippet section? If yes, then which one would you recommend? My thinking was to leave out the 0.020' (25lb) section and therefore drop from 0.022' down to 0.018' and on to 0.015' (20lb) fluoro and 0.011' (12lb) fluoro. Final formula would therefore be 0.026', 0.022', 0.018' (all M/H mono) + 0.015' and 0.012' fluoro. Thoughts?

    • @coreytohme9861
      @coreytohme9861 Рік тому

      I would just sub the 12 lb fluoro for the 16 lb fluoro and leave the rest of the leader as it is.

    Would really like to know if starting a 12ft tapered leader for dry fly size 14 to 20 at 18lb test is about the normal butt,,

    • @Matthew_Patterson56
      @Matthew_Patterson56 7 місяців тому

      I would say that 6x-4x (tapered leader that I would use on size 14-20 flies) is probably 18-20 pounds in the butt section.

    I have a 9wt rod. What's gonna be the advantages of using 4 sections (60,50,30,25) like you said vs a 3 section leader like (50,40,30)?

  • @charlespaniszyn
    @charlespaniszyn 3 роки тому

    Now I understand the taper on the Bruce Chard Tropical Punch line better. It has only a 2 foot front taper (very short). But Bruce makes up for this short front taper by throwing a 12 foot leader, with the first section 60# mono. So in essence, he has a clear front taper by virtue of the heavy mono. Very clever. And the Tropical Punch line has a short 20' belly to really load quickly without needing a lot of line in the air to load. Yet, because of the long 19' rear taper, you are able to carry a lot of line in the air if you need to for a really long cast. His particular system of leader and line seem to mate very well. (The possible exception is a real calm day where the heavy belly on the line doewn't give the most delicate of presentations. But how many really calm days are there? And occasionally, the tarpon may even be drawn by the "plop'' in the water, while bonefish always bolt away.)

    • @coreytohme9861

      Most tarpon flies are much smaller than 7 inches and are unweighted. Also, that leader has the mass and the correct energy transfer due to its taper as Bruce mentioned.

  • @Charsept

    I imagine for juvenile reds and specks, I'd scale this down to something like: 30lb mono butt, 20lb mono middle, 15lb fluoro end with a 12lb fluoro tippet? Is that about right?

  • @JD-hs7ib
    @JD-hs7ib 4 роки тому

    The stiffness of the leader material has a lot more to do with power transfer than diameter !!!! but steppin down the diameter makes for nice strong knots most of the time.

Having extras is a good thing so if your leader gets cut , chaffed ,abraded you’re can change it out quickly and be ready to go . Thanks for the video :-)

      Bob Malvina I think your missing the point of this video. He clearly states how to rig a leader for Tarpon fishing? Yes it is a bit of a recipe and that's what we are all here for. If you want to learn the two knots he is using there a far more appropriate UA-cam videos discussing the blood knot and perfection loop. This video assumes the viewer has some knowledge of both. Great video in my opinion. I'm not going Tarpon fishing but the fundamentals regarding leader function and design I will apply to the fishing I intend on doing.

    What would the main difference be between this leader and the DEEP SINK FLY LEADER ?

    • @HatchOutdoorsInc
      @HatchOutdoorsInc 5 років тому

      Hey Tim, thanks for your question. The short answer is that this system and the deep sink fly leader have the same basic system, however with the added 30lb leader on the line-end of this system, the fly will not sink as fast as the deep sink fly leader because of its wider diameter. For a more detailed explanation or for helping setting up your own system, please contact info@hatchoutdoors and we will help you out!

    Can this be attached to a floating line? Or is a sinking line a must?

    • @HatchOutdoorsInc
      @HatchOutdoorsInc 5 років тому

      Hello! Sorry for the delayed response to your question. The answer is no - it just depends on what you're fishing! If you are in slower moving water or perhaps a lake then using a floating line is no big deal. You should be able to reach depths from 1 to 6 ft. However, if you are in a faster flowing river then the sinking line is necessary to drop faster or reach depths of 6ft or more! Sorry again on the late response but I hope this helps!
